Open letter from UK university staff: Request for biometric deferral and safe evacuation of incoming Palestinian students and scholars from Gaza to UK Universities

More than 40 students currently trapped in Gaza with full scholarships to UK Universities are asking for a safe route to come and study.We, the academic community hoping to welcome these scholars, call on the UK government, Home Office and Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office to facilitate a biometric visa deferral and open a route of safe passage for our incoming students so they can take up their places of study in September.

Since October 2023, Israel has shifted its policy toward the Palestinians. In a July 2025 exposé by Double Down News, former UNRWA official Chris Gunness revealed Israel’s systematic weaponization of humanitarian aid in Gaza, detailing how the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) – staffed by ex-military personnel – has replaced UNRWA while enabling attacks on civilians seeking food (over 875 people killed). The testimony exposes Israel’s use of biblical genocidal narratives (Amalek doctrine), deliberate obstruction of aid under humanitarian pretexts, and Western complicity through defunding of UNRWA while sanctioning International Criminal Court investigators – constituting what legal experts identify as violations of the Genocide Convention’s prohibition on starvation tactics. This institutionalized violence represents an alarming case of humanitarian systems being repurposed for population control.
