GENEVA (16 May 2024) – The death of a renowned Palestinian orthopedic surgeon after nearly four months in detention was “horrifying”, a UN expert said today, demanding an independent international investigation into the circumstances of his demise.
Leiden University has recently received various petitions from students and staff concerning our ties with Israeli universities. We have also held extensive discussions with the University Council in response to questions raised on the subject. We think it important that our partners and research projects reflect our values and respect human rights, equality, academic freedom and integrity. We therefore need an ethical assessment framework similar to the one for collaboration with the fossil fuel industry.

South Africa’s ambassador to the Netherlands, Vusi Madonsela, asked the court in his opening remarks to « do what it can to stop the genocide, » which he said had « shocked the conscience of humanity. »
He added that South Africa’s fourth submission to the court was triggered not only by the assault on Rafah but by an intensification of the Israeli assault across Gaza in the last few days.

On April 30th 2024, 77 percent of the faculty of Barnard College voted no confidence in President Laura Rosenbury. This week, the Columbia University Faculty of Arts and Sciences voted no confidence in President Nemat Shafik with a 65 percent majority. These motions insist on the vital need for shared governance and due process and call for resistance against external influences over our university community.
Hundreds of professors at the university weighed in on the resolution, which said the president, Nemat Shafik, had committed an “unprecedented assault on student’s rights.”
