Quelques 204 universitaires sud-africains ont signé une déclaration les engageant à soutenir les droits du peuple palestinien. Exprimant leur inquiétude au sujet de « l’occupation illégale des terres palestiniennes par Israël » et « des violations intolérables des droits de l’Homme qu’il inflige à toutes les parties du peuple palestinien », ces universitaires prennent l’engagement de ne pas accepter les invitations des institutions universitaires israéliennes, à ne pas agir en tant que référents des institutions israéliennes, et à ne pas participer aux conférences organisées ou financées par les institutions israéliennes.
Le groupe sud-africain comprend des professeurs issus d’universités de tout le pays, ainsi que des universitaires d’instituts de recherche et de groupes de réflexion. Leur déclaration fait suite à un engagement similaire pris en octobre par 600 universitaires du Royaume Uni. Les Sud-Africains ont souscrit à cet engagement.

Engagement d’Universitaires sud-africains pour les Droits des Palestiniens
Nous, universitaires sud-africains, prenant note de l’initiative de plus de 600 de nos collègues du Royaume Uni en solidarité avec les Palestiniens sous occupation, souscrivons comme eux à l’engagement pour les droits des Palestiniens comme cela a été publié le 27 octobre 2015 par le journal The Guardian. Nous remarquons aussi que, le 4 novembre, plus de 120 universitaires en poste en Irlande ont également souscrit à cet engagement. En tant que professeurs associés à des universités sud-africaines, nous sommes nous aussi profondément perturbés par l’occupation illégale des terres palestiniennes par Israël, les violations intolérables des droits de l’Homme qu’il inflige à toutes les parties du peuple palestinien, et son apparente détermination à ne résister à aucune possibilité de construction de colonie.
Pour répondre à l’appel de la société civile palestinienne, nous déclarons donc nous aussi que :
- nous n’accepterons pas d’invitations de la part d’institutions universitaires israéliennes
- nous ne serons leurs avocats dans aucune de leurs démarches
- nous ne participerons pas à des conférences financées, organisées ou sponsorisées par elles, ou ne coopérerons d’aucune manière avec elles.
Nous continuerons cependant à travailler avec nos collègues israéliens à titre individuel et conformément à un engagement partagé de nos collègues israéliens sur la position que nous avons soulignée dans cette déclaration.
Nous resterons sur cette position jusqu’à ce que l’État d’Israël se soumette à la législation internationale et respecte les principes universels des droits de l’Homme.
