Dans cette réponse publique à la campagne de diffamation et aux attaques personnelles visant Richard Horton, rédacteur en chef du Lancet, la Plainte au Lancet adressée à Reed Elsevier, nous affirmons :
- Richard Horton est tenu en haute estime en tant que dirigeant exceptionnel dans le domaine de la santé publique et en tant que rédacteur en chef du Lancet, s’inscrivant dans les meilleures traditions de la Revue.
- La politique est intrinsèque à de nombreuses questions de santé et il s’agit d’un sujet de débat et de commentaires légitime dans le domaine de la santé, et tout particulièrement dans les principales revues de santé internationales. La controverse est un aspect sain et inévitable des échanges publics sur les questions politiques.
- La « Lettre ouverte aux gens de Gaza » traitait d’un problème d’actualité important, dont les principaux points ont été corroborés par des rapports indépendants sur ce qui s’est passé dans la Bande de Gaza pendant l’été 2014 qu’il est possible que certains des plaignants ignorent.
- Décrire la Lettre Ouverte comme le « stéréotype d’une propagande de haine extrémiste » est une exagération inexacte qui n’est d’aucune utilité.
- Le Lancet a fourni une couverture égalitaire des points de vue pour et contre la lettre dans la correspondance publiée par la suite, laquelle reflétait le ratio des lettres reçues par la Revue, permettant ainsi qu’un débat sain puisse avoir lieu.
- La revue de presse faite par la médiatrice du Lancet sur la question était juste et équilibrée, soulignant les points forts et les points faibles de la lettre et la manière dont la controverse a été traitée, afin que tout le monde puisse en prendre connaissance. Elle n’était pas convaincue qu’il fallait retirer la lettre.
- Le Comité d’étique de la publication (COPE) est le mieux placé pour juger si son Code de la conduite et ses directives de bonnes pratiques ont été enfreints. Une session précédente du COPE a écrit que la Lettre ouverte ne devait pas être retirée.
- La violente tentative de forcer le Lancet à retirer la Lettre ouverte est la dernière d’une série de tentatives visant à étouffer la couverture médiatique du problème israélo-palestinien auxquelles il faut résister.
- A la lumière des rapports de médecins destinés à Human Rights-Israel, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, aux Nations Unies et à d’autres organisations, le « travail inachevé » de l’opération Bordure de Protection visait à déterminer si et par qui, des deux côtés du conflit, des violations des droits de l’homme internationaux et de la loi humanitaire ont été commises.
