Cher Emir Kusturica,

Nous avons appris que vous aviez l’intention de donner un concert en Israël avec le No Smoking Orchestra, et nous vous écrivons dans l’espoir que vous annuliez ce concert.

Nous savons que vous tournez un film en Israël/Palestine, et nous faisons confiance à votre sens politique pour espérer que la réalité de la vie quotidienne des Palestiniens sous occupation y soit rendue dans toute son horreur, de la dépossession de leurs maisons aux nombreuses lois discriminatoires qu’ils subissent, dans un système antidémocratique que l’on peut qualifier d’apartheid.

En revanche, en vous produisant là-bas en tant qu’artiste, vous offrez votre image à ce pays, image dont il se sert pour polir la sienne, se fondre dans la culture « civilisée » et banaliser ses crimes. Il est certain que l’Etat israélien interprétera votre concert comme un soutien politique, et pas seulement culturel. Enfin, sachez que la plupart des Palestiniens ne pourront pas entendre la musique revigorante du No Smoking Orchestra, ni la partager, ni la vivre, car ils ne seront pas autorisés à se rendre sur les lieux de vos concerts.

C’est en réaction à des décennies d’oppression et l’échec de toutes formes de tentatives de paix, inspiré par la lutte des Sud-Africains contre l’apartheid, que le peuple palestinien appelle les artistes de conscience au Boycott, au Désinvestissement et aux Sanctions (BDS) contre Israël, afin que prenne fin le plus long conflit de l’histoire récente. La campagne BDS demande tout simplement l’application du droit international : la fin de la colonisation, de l’occupation, du blocus de Gaza et le démantèlement du Mur; la fin de l’apartheid pour les palestiniens de 48 (dits « Arabes israéliens ») ; le droit au retour pour tous les réfugiés.

Cet appel au BDS a changé les choses, et des cinéastes comme Ken Loach, Jean-Luc Godard ou Meg Ryan, des musiciens comme Elvis Costello, les Pixies ou Massive Attack ont publiquement refusé de jouer ce jeu-là. Jouer en Israël aujourd’hui est un geste politique, et nous espérons vous compter parmi les artistes qui se joindront à l’appel non-violent au boycott d’Israël et, ainsi, aider à atteindre l’égalité des droits et la justice en Palestine-Israël.

En réponse à l’appel palestinien à la solidarité internationale, refusez de jouer pour l’apartheid israélien.

Dear Emir Kusturica,

We have learned that you are intending to give a concert in Israel with the No Smoking Orchestra, and we are writing to urge you to cancel the concert.

We know that you are making a film in Israel/Palestine, and we trust your political sense to guarantee that the reality of Palestinian daily life under occupation will be presented in all its horror, from the dispossession of their homes to the numerous discriminatory laws to which they are subjected, in an undemocratic system that can be described as apartheid.

By performing in Israel as an artist, on the other hand, you are offering your image to this country, and Israel will use your image to polish its own, to prove itself a representative of « civilized » culture and in this way to trivialize its crimes. It is absolutely certain that the state of Israel will view your concert as a form of political support, not merely a cultural event. And please don’t forget that the vast majority of Palestinians will not be able to hear, share, or experience the invigorating music of the No Smoking Orchestra, because they will not be permitted to travel to the site of your concert.

As a reaction to decades of oppression and to the failure of all attempts at peace, and taking inspiration from the South African struggle against apartheid, the Palestinian people have called on artists of conscience to join the movement of Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) against Israel, in order to end the longest conflict in recent history. The BDS campaign asks for nothing more than the application of international law: ending the settlements, the occupation, and the blockade of Gaza, and dismantling the Wall; ending apartheid for the Palestinians of 1948 (the so-called « Israeli Arabs »); and the right of return for all refugees.

Things have changed as a result of this BDS call. Filmmakers and actors like Ken Loach, Jean-Luc Godard, and Meg Ryan, and musicians such as Elvis Costello, the Pixies, and Massive Attack, have publicly refused to play this game. To perform in Israel today is to make a political statement. We hope to count you among the artists joining the non-violent call to boycott Israel, and in this way helping to bring about equality of rights and justice in Palestine-Israel.

In response to the Palestinian call for international solidarity, please refuse to entertain Israeli apartheid.
