CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, is beginning formal discussions with Israel for the latter’s accession to membership in the prestigious international organization.
Israel is currently an Observer State in CERN, a necessary prerequisite for membership.
The 1954 convention establishing CERN’s clearly notes that “The Organization shall have no concern with work for military requirements and the results of its experimental and theoretical work shall be published or otherwise made generally available”. This is in stark contrast to the practice of a majority of Israeli universities and institutes, which often receiving funding and work closely with the Israeli military and security companies. Tel Aviv University, for example, recently hosted a youth seminar together with Israel’s Ministry of Defence entitled Science and Technology in the Service of Security.
Israeli President Shimon Peres is scheduled to visit CERN sometime in January 2011, following Israel’s anticipated accession to the organization in the coming days.
