Mr. President of the French Republic,
Under your high patronage, the French Republic is preparing the launch of the “France-Israel season 2018”. This event, we are told,
“aims to demonstrate the vitality of the bilateral relation in cultural and scientific fields, to mark a new stage in economic relations and to refresh the way that French people look at Israel and Israeli people look at France”.
Moreover,
“Through more than 400 events in both countries, the France-Israel season 2018 will echo in about fifty cities in France and twenty in Israel around a variety of themes such as innovation, science, economics, theatre, dance, contemporary art, music, education, cinema, design, books and debates on ideas”.
This opening will take place in a context where breaches of international law in Palestinian territories have reached an unprecedented degree. Settlements keep expanding and the US embassy has been transferred to Jerusalem. To have the “France-Israel season 2018” unfold in such circumstances is by itself untimely, for it is obvious that this event is linked to a strategy aiming to restore the image of a state whose annexationist nature is by now clear to everyone.
Nowadays, however, it is simply not admissible to maintain this “France-Israel season” in spite of the latest slaughter in Gaza. It would be an irretrievable blow to our republican principles and to our values of justice.
Under the current circumstances, we, as French citizens, cannot accept this state-to-state collaboration between France and Israel. We cannot bow before the normalization of relations with a colonial regime that flouts human rights and international conventions to which France is a party.
Indeed, how could we act as if nothing had happened? As if scores of young people had not been deliberately killed? As if demonstrators who merely called for the respect of their fundamental rights had not been crippled for life? As if the ghetto of Gaza was not running the risk of being wiped out, with the active or passive complicity of the international community?
For this reason, Mr. President of the French Republic, we demand that you ensure that the “France-Israel season 2018” does not take place. Let us not talk about “education” or “ideas” with a state that in the space of a few weeks has just murdered more than 110 freedom-loving young people, and injured or maimed more than 8000. Send a clear signal to the Israeli government by publicly giving up on the “France-Israel season 2018”. The French civil society cannot watch these events being held without expressing its disapproval.
