TULKAREM (Ma’an) — Israeli forces on Monday detained six students from the Palestine Technical University in western Tulkarem after clashes erupted on the university campus, a student leader told Ma’an.

Samer Fakhouri, the coordinator for the Fatah student bloc at the university, told Ma’an that five Palestinians were detained during the clashes, while another was detained on his way home.

He said that Israeli forces had “ambushed” the students at a temporary fixture they have set up inside the campus due to regular clashes and student demonstrations there.

Fakhouri identified the four students as Saif Hawawri, Muhammad Darbi, Luay Abbas, and Muhammad Qarariya, adding that all the students are from al-Fandaqumiya village in southwestern Jenin.

Separately, Fakhouri said that Israeli forces detained another university student, Ahmad Izz al-Din Amarneh, at a flying checkpoint while the student was on him way home.

Just short of 1,000 Palestinians, including 147 children, have been detained by Israeli forces since the beginning of the month, Palestinian prisoners’ rights group Addameer said Monday.

According to UN figures, there has been a weekly average of 78 Israeli army “search and arrest operations” carried out across the occupied West Bank, with a sharp increase since protests spread across the occupied territory earlier this month.
