Since October 1, more than 70 Palestinians (including many children) have been killed, and more than 2600 injured by bullets in Jerusalem and in the West Bank, as well as in Gaza; the latter deaths and injuries occurred during demonstrations in front of Israeli troops mobilized to prevent escape from this open‐air prison. The images that come to us are terrifying. The army and the Israeli police, encouraged by their Government and by the total impunity of Israeli criminals — settlers, police or military — which adds to the impunity enjoyed by the State of Israel in the concert of nations, seem no longer subject to any restraint. Meanwhile, 322 Palestinian Arab workers have been dismissed from companies in Israel under the pretext of the “preservation of security,” — in reality dismissed simply because they are Arabs — while hundreds of racist attacks are perpetrated.
If the Western media speak of violence in which both sides have their share of responsibility, it should be remembered that Israel is responding to stone‐throwing and knives with one of the world’s most powerful armies. It should especially be remembered that, for nearly 70 years, the Government of Israel has been violating international law by continuing to occupy and to build settlements in Palestinian land, by continuing the construction of the apartheid wall, by discrimination against Palestinians from Israel, by continuing the blockade of Gaza, by arbitrarily imprisoning thousands of Palestinians, and by denying the right of return of millions of Palestinian refugees.
The measures taken by the Netanyahu Government (shooting live ammunition at young stone‐throwers, an official license to kill; demolition of the homes of those involved in knife attacks; and closure of the Palestinian areas of Jerusalem) are collective punishment and represent a new decline in the rule of law, all for the benefit of a summary justice which makes a mockery of investigations and trial. The unprecedented violence exercised by the State of Israel, with the silent complicity of the French government, must be denounced with force, and everything must be implemented to stop the bloodbath that is no more than the consequence of a military occupation and colonization that have lasted too long.
