Pierre Nicodème on the Complicity of the Ministry of Higher Education with Reichman University: “Disgust and Anger”

Pierre Nicodème, a retired mathematician and computer scientist at the CNRS, is returning the CNRS Medal of Honor, which he received in 2013, in response to pressure from the Ministry of Higher Education on the IEP of Strasbourg to maintain its partnership with Reichman University in Herzliya, Israel. In an open letter we publish here, he expresses “disgust and anger” at the ministry’s political choices. It is also an occasion for him to offer a personal testimony as a committed intellectual on how France, over the past two decades (since Nicolas Sarkozy’s election in 2007), has completely abandoned any concern for justice and balance in its handling of the Palestinian issue.

We stand in solidarity with our US-based colleagues—whether they are  US citizens, permanent residents, or academic visa holders. We consider the US Administration’s invocations of antisemitism to be disingenuous, thinly veiled attacks against Muslims, Palestinians, pro-Palestinian, and international students, serving as a pretext for the violent suppression of protected speech and the abolition of the university as a space for free inquiry. We also recognize that the same rhetoric can quickly turn on us or other groups if and when it serves the Administration’s interests. We stand alongside our colleagues firmly against this dangerous assault on academia.

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) condemns in the strongest terms the heinous crime committed by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) today, 13 April 2025, in the early morning when the latter directly bombed al-Ahli Arab Hospital “Baptist” in Gaza City. This healthcare facility is the last standing one providing health services, at very limited capacity, to more than one million Palestinians in Gaza City and northern Gaza amid a total collapse of the healthcare system due to the ongoing genocide against the Gaza Strip population.

Gaza: Increasing Israeli “evacuation orders” lead to forcible transfer of Palestinians

Israeli military strikes continue across Gaza, leaving nowhere safe. Between 18 March and 9 April 2025, there were some 224 incidents of Israeli strikes on residential buildings and tents for internally displaced people (IDPs). In some 36 strikes about which the UN Human Rights Office corroborated information, the fatalities recorded so far were only women and children.

Since Israel’s breach and rejection of the ceasefire, and resumption of aerial bombardments on Gaza, Israel has escalated its mass killings (at least 50,810 Palestinians have been killed and 115,688 injured since 7 October 2023), mass forced displacements, and total destruction and annihilation of Gaza. Israel is starving Palestinians in Gaza seeking their total erasure in what has been described as “the fastest starvation campaign in modern history”.
