SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – MARCH 1, 2016: Palestine Advocacy Project has brought the work of Palestinian National Poet Mahmoud Darwish to San Francisco in a series of posters on SFMTA buses and trains. The selection of poetry includes excerpts from the epic ‘Under Siege’, as a well as shorter, but no less powerful works such as ‘Earth Poem’ and ‘A Lover From Palestine’.

“Darwish captures the dual emotions of homesickness and hope that have defined the past several decades of Palestinian popular art,” said Palestine Advocacy Project Board Member Clare Maxwell, “I think a lot of people in the Bay Area will be able to relate.”
Born in 1941 in British Mandatory Palestine, Darwish survived a childhood marked by war, exile, and political turmoil. These experiences inspired him to write a body of work centered on the fragile idea of a Palestinian homeland. Today, Darwish is considered one of the greatest Arab poets of the twentieth century because of the way he expertly mixed political themes with traditional styles.
Selections from seven of Darwish’s most beloved poems will be accessible to commuters on Light Rail trains and MUNI buses throughout the month of March. The posters feature original photographs of everyday life in the West Bank, Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip.
